The Story Behind the Shape of the Coca-Cola Bottle π«
The formula for Coca‑Cola was created in 1886. The formula was made using two main ingredients: the coca leaf and the cola nut. That is how the name “Coca-Cola” was formed.π₯€
The drink quickly became very popular. Because of this, by around 1915 many other companies started copying it. At that time, other companies began making drinks similar to Coca-Cola and even used bottles that looked just like the original Coca-Cola bottle.
As a result, the The Coca‑Cola Company wanted to create a unique bottle design. So in 1915 they announced a nationwide competition, inviting people to design a new bottle. They promised to choose the best design.
A company called Root Glass Company applied for the competition and assigned a designer named Earl R. Dean to create the design.π§π¬
Since there was no internet at that time, Earl Dean went to a local library to do some research. He wanted to design the bottle based on the shape of the cola nut. However, he couldn’t find any information about the cola nut in the library.ππBecause of that, he assumed that the cola nut might be similar to a cocoa pod.π So he designed the bottle inspired by the shape of a cocoa pod.
In reality, cocoa has nothing to do with Coca-Cola, but surprisingly this design won the competition.
An important fact is that in 1916 the bottle design and packaging were trademarked, both with and without the brand name. Because of this, even today, no one can legally copy the shape of the bottle even if the brand name is not on it since the bottle shape itself is a registered trademark.π΅️♂
