The 18 Hairpin Bends I Love to Travel 🥰🍃



This road was built in the 19th century (around 1825) during the British colonial period. It was mainly used to transport coffee, tea, and spices grown in the hill country to the Colombo port. There is also a local legend that the road was designed based on a shortcut shown to a British engineer by a native Vedda.


Although it is called the “18 Bends,” today there are only about 17 bends remaining, as one was removed during road widening. After a large-scale renovation project that began in 2008, this once narrow and dangerous road was widened up to 15 meters and carpeted by 2012. As a result, the travel time from Mahiyanganaya to Kandy, which used to take around 4 hours, has been reduced to about 1.5 hours. 👌


This road is a major tourist attraction. From the top, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Mahiyanganaya valley, the Mahaweli River, and Sorabora Lake, along with the beautiful landscapes of the Eastern Province. ⛰️🍃 With its sharp and winding turns, it offers an exciting experience for both drivers and motorcyclists.


Anyway, this is one of my most favorite roads to travel in Sri Lanka the famous 18 hairpin bends.
