“An event that made the whole world talk about Sri Lanka.” ππ±π°
The walk began on April 21 near the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura, and was then officially launched from the Dambulla Royal Cave Temple. The route passed through Dambulla, Matale, Kandy, Belligammana, Tholangamuwa, Yakkala, Kadawatha, and Mahara, before reaching the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara.
The walk concluded on April 28 at Independence Square in Colombo, with a state ceremony attended by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Special Highlights:
Throughout the journey, a sacred sapling from the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi and revered Buddha relics were carried ceremonially. A dog named Aloka also joined the walk as a symbol of global peace. The main purpose of this event was to spread the message of peace, loving-kindness, and mindful living (mindfulness) to the world.
One of the most remarkable aspects of this journey was the devotion and hospitality of the Sri Lankan people. Along many parts of the route, thousands of banana leaves were laid on the roads and watered to keep them cool, allowing the monks to walk comfortably without their feet being burned by the heat. This was truly a gesture worthy of great appreciation.
